Understanding Market Structure
Before placing a trade, it is important to understand what price is already communicating.
Market structure is the foundation of technical analysis. It helps traders determine who is currently in control of the market—buyers or sellers—and provides valuable context before considering any indicators or trading systems.
Learning to recognize market structure allows you to make decisions based on what the market is doing rather than what you hope it will do.
Higher Highs and Higher Lows
An uptrend is formed when price consistently creates:
Higher Highs (HH)
Higher Lows (HL)
This pattern indicates that buyers remain in control and are willing to purchase at increasingly higher prices.
As long as this sequence continues, the overall trend remains healthy.
Rather than attempting to predict a reversal, traders should respect the current structure until it clearly changes.
Lower Highs and Lower Lows
A downtrend develops when price consistently forms:
Lower Highs (LH)
Lower Lows (LL)
This tells us that sellers are controlling the market and buyers have been unable to push price above previous highs.
Recognizing this structure helps traders avoid fighting the trend and encourages patience while waiting for higher-probability opportunities.
Consolidation
Markets do not trend all the time.
Periods of consolidation occur when buyers and sellers are relatively balanced, causing price to move sideways within a range.
During consolidation you may notice:
Smaller candles
Slower momentum
Frequent reversals
Less directional movement
Patience during these periods is often rewarded when the market eventually chooses a direction.
Support and Resistance
Previous swing highs and swing lows frequently become important areas where price may react.
These areas can:
Slow price movement
Create reversals
Produce breakouts
Offer trade opportunities
Always identify nearby support and resistance before entering a position.
Knowing where these levels exist helps traders better manage both entries and exits.
Why Market Structure Matters
Before evaluating indicators such as Momentum, Volume, ADX, or any trading system, first ask:
What is price already telling me?
Market structure provides the framework that allows indicators to become meaningful.
Indicators should support your analysis—not replace it.
When market structure and your confirmations align, confidence in the trade generally increases.
