What Is ADX?

The Average Directional Index (ADX) measures the strength of a trend, not its direction.

A rising ADX tells us that the current trend is becoming stronger.

A falling ADX tells us that the trend is losing strength.

ADX does not tell us whether the market is moving up or down. Instead, it measures how much strength is behind the current move.

Rising ADX

When ADX is rising, it often indicates that buyers or sellers are becoming more committed to the current trend.

Characteristics of a rising ADX include:

  • Increasing trend strength

  • Better directional movement

  • Improved follow-through

  • Greater confidence in existing trends

A rising ADX supports the idea that the market is moving with conviction.

Falling ADX

A falling ADX does not necessarily mean the trend has ended.

Instead, it suggests that the current trend is beginning to lose strength.

ADX Works Best with Other Confirmations

ADX should never be used by itself.

Instead, combine ADX with:

  • Momentum

  • Volume
